Free Fishing Day June 2nd at  Tugman StatePark
Contributed by: Linda I. Murray Stange, Eel-Tenmile STEP free fishing volunteer coordinator
Eel-Tenmile Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) is a group of volunteers who in a partnership with the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Department (ODFW) sponsor a free fishing day for children 14 and under to experience catching a trout at Eel Lake in Tugman Park. The children learn to identify fish, tie knots, make a lure, learn fishing courtesy, cast a fishing pole and a fly rod. They catch a fish, have their picture taken with their fish, receive a fishing pole and reel, and receive a free hot dog or hamburger lunch. This event is Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 9 am to 2 pm.
Enjoy Free Fishing Weekend June 2-3
Introduce a friend, child, co-worker or family member to fishing during Oregon’s free fishing days. ODFW offers Oregon residents and visitors the opportunity to explore and experience fishing, crabbing, clamming without the need for a license or tags. Fishing regulation and bag limits still apply.
Join us at a Free Fishing Event - https://myodfw.com/articles/2018-free-fishing-days-and-events
The first weekend in June is Oregon’s traditional Free Fishing Weekend. On this weekend, ODFW and its partners will be sponsoring fishing events throughout the state. These events are free, and at most we’ll even provide the gear and instruction you’ll need to get started – from baiting the hook to landing your catch.

Oregon State Parks Day, June 2
A big welcome to all our campers and visitors Saturday, June 2 in celebration of State Parks Day. Camping is free the night of June 2 in full hookup, electric hookup and tent sites. Parking at the 26 day-use parks that charge a parking fee is free June 2 and June 3, too.
18 state parks are hosting barbecue picnics, a family safety fair, outdoor concerts, ranger-led hikes and more. Full details about events at each park are here: https://oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm?do=v.dsp_featureArticle&articleId=229
If you want to guarantee a camping site, you’ll need a reservation (the reservation fee is $8, and that’s a flat fee no matter how many nights you stay). Make your campsite reservations by calling 1-800-452-5687. Or, reserve online at www.oregonstateparks.org. Approximately half of Oregon’s state park campgrounds take reservations.
Also, June 2-3 is Free Fishing Weekend. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and partners are hosting a number of events around the state, including several in or near state parks. Volunteer angler education instructors will be loaning out fishing gear and giving tips on how to catch and clean fish at most events. For more details and contact information for these events, visit https://myodfw.com/articles/2018-free-fishing-days-and-events

Coos County Herbicide Cost-Share Program
It’s back! The Coos County Noxious Weed Advisory Board has worked hard over the past year to revamp the herbicide cost-share program. Overturn in the Advisory Board has created some hardship and time constraints which delayed our efforts, but the Board of Commissioners recognized the importance of this program to our county and has supported this process. Limitations on funds and personnel time made the old cost-share model unsustainable. The current Advisory Board has worked hard to retain the basic structure of the program but has also creatively reworked parts of it so that it better fits their current capacity (in terms of funding and “people time”), while still striving to meet the county-wide weed management priorities.
The Coos County Noxious Weed Advisory Board is now accepting Herbicide Cost-Share Applications. This year the cost-share program will be focusing on assisting landowners with herbicides to treat noxious weeds that have been identified by Coos County as “targeted for control”, these can be found on Coos County’s official Noxious Weed List under “T”. All applications must be completed and received by 5:00 pm on May 31, 2018. Applications are available for pickup and drop off at Coos County Planning Department (225 N. Adams St. Coquille), Oregon State University Extension Office (631 Alder St. Myrtle Point) or on the website located on the County’s homepage under County Boards and Committees – Weed Board. You can also download the application from the Coos County OSU Extension website: extension.oregonstate.edu/coos
The cost-share program will be able to pay 50% of the cost and the applicant will be responsible for the rest. The Advisory Board is requiring successful applicants to attend one of two trainings on pesticide use and safety (June 19 or June 27 - - more information provided in the application). The Advisory Board is in the process of contracting with an herbicide vendor and will not have prices available until the training. Applicants will be notified of the cost of the requested herbicide and surfactant as well as the location and date when herbicides can be picked-up during the training. The training will be a great opportunity to learn about weed control, weed identification and safety measures when handling herbicides. Even if you don’t use herbicides the training provides an educational opportunity.

See the New Exhibit Summer Afternoons at the Marshfield Sun Printing Museum
Why do we call capital letters “upper case” and the other letters “lower case”?  Why do we call news media “the press”?
Find the answer to these and much more any Tuesday through Saturday summer afternoon when you visit The Marshfield Sun Printing Museum on Coos Bay’s historic waterfront. New this year is timeline information about all the past newspapers in the Coos Bay Area.
The Sun’s original—and now historic—printing presses and other fascinating equipment can be viewed up close as skilled volunteers interpret and demonstrate how they work. Printing Museum volunteers also answer questions about the Museum’s exhibits on printing and office technology.
Combine a visit to the Marshfield Sun with a visit to the nearby Coos History Museum for a jam-packed afternoon of interesting local history.
The Marshfield Sun Printing Museum is a unique printing museum located in that building at the north end of Front Street on Coos Bay’s historic waterfront. The unusually shaped building was built as the home for the Marshfield Sun newspaper and print shop in 1911. The Marshfield Sun was a working newspaper office and print shop from 1891 to 1944—and is today essentially as it was left in 1944, with additional exhibits upstairs and on the walls.
The Marshfield Sun Printing Museum’s regular summer hours begin the day after Memorial Day and go through Labor Day: 1pm – 4pm Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free.
Call 541-267-4027 for more information.

Free Tour at Oregon Coast Historical Railway
766 S. First St  (Across from McDonald’s on HWY 101 N)

The museum features photos, equipment and artifacts of railroading and logging industries, as well as a toy train layout for youngsters.
Volunteers Sought for Railroad Group
The Oregon Coast Historical Railway is looking for volunteers to help out at their popular museum and display area in Coos Bay. No prior railroad experience is needed, just a desire to greet the many enthusiastic visitors who visit this year round attraction. The group also has a number of restoration projects under way, with a particular need for volunteers with carpentry or woodworking skills.
Hours are flexible but one thing is constant – just about everyone loves a train, so this is a fun place to visit and spend some time. If you can help, call Dick Jamsgard at (541)297-6130.
